The San Diego Regional EDC’s study of North County manufacturing, run with the five cities along the 78 corridor, counted 813 local manufacturing firms and 40,151 manufacturing jobs, with manufacturing accounting for roughly $18 billion a year — about seven percent of the area’s economy. Computer and electronic product manufacturing alone accounted for nearly a third of those jobs. The study is from early 2021, so the counts describe that moment rather than today, but the shape of the corridor is the point: a lot of small and mid-sized makers, many of them suppliers to someone larger.
To the north is Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, which describes itself as the largest employer in North San Diego County for more than 60 years, with a daytime population of about 70,000 military and civilian personnel. The base names Carlsbad, Escondido, Fallbrook, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista among the neighbouring cities that provide the employment, housing and services its population relies on.
Add sizable cities in their own right — Oceanside and Escondido each counted more than 150,000 residents in the 2020 Census — and North County ends up with a dense layer of service businesses, contractors and clinics alongside the makers.
Carlsbad, the coastal anchor of the corridor, has a different profile again. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s list of the city’s top employers puts satellite-communications company ViaSat and Thermo Fisher Scientific beside LEGOLAND California, the Omni La Costa resort, the golf-equipment makers TaylorMade and Callaway Golf, and Ionis Pharmaceuticals: technology, biotechnology, hospitality and sporting goods within one city limit.

Where small manufacturers and service firms get stuck.
A small manufacturer usually runs on an ERP or accounting system that was configured once and then worked around for years. Quoting lives in a spreadsheet, the production schedule lives in someone’s head, and inventory is counted rather than known. None of that matters until a large customer asks for delivery dates the business cannot promise or cost data it cannot produce — and customers higher in an electronics supply chain commonly ask for both. The same EDC study put 9,804 of the corridor’s manufacturing jobs, nearly a quarter, at higher-than-average risk of automation. Service businesses around the base and the growing inland cities face a different squeeze: demand that fluctuates with deployments, housing and seasons, and a small team doing scheduling, dispatch and billing by hand.
